Coir rope
Activities:

Coir rope making

Initial Beneficiaries:

28 women, previously bonded laborers

Seed Funding Date:

Fall 2017

The group's proposal for funding was approved at the Spring 2017 RSWR Board meeting and the funds were distributed to the group in July 2017. Before receiving their loans, the group received three days of upgraded skill training, and two days of capacity building training. 28 women received an initial loan of $151, with the expectation that they would make $91 per month in profit (after loan repayment and savings).

As of their six-month report in February 2018 the women's businesses were doing well and they had been repaying their loans on schedule. There had been some initial setbacks, including machinery breaking down and some women needing additional training. However RWDT staff was able to assist the women with locating machine maintenance and doing additional training with those who needed it. The report also noted that 18 new women had been able to receive a loan from the repaid funds.

Beneficiary Stories

Kavitha

Kavitha

Kavitha is 29 years old, with two children ages 2 and 5. In 2009, she and her husband went to work as bonded laborers to settle a debt. They worked 12 hours a day without rest or leave, and she faced many health problems. In 2014 government officials and the Rural Women Development Trust (RWDT) team raided the workshop, and she was freed. The RWDT team encouraged her to join a self-help group and take skill training in coir making. She now has regular work and a good income; moreover, her oldest child just began school.

7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all you need, you will abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:7-8
